The Family of Peter Wombwell and Susan Dyer
This branch in a sense is quite interesting because the truth was stumbled on rather than
researched. What actually happened was that I had established that a Peter existed and he was
the son of a John. I had another John of similar age who I knew was the father of two sons, John
and Charles. Charles brought up a family in Essex and then emigrated to Australia, while John
stayed in Essex to raise his family.
I had long suspected that Peter's father John was the same person as the father of John and
Charles. A chance mention from a contact in Australia showed that this was, in fact, the case.
Peter, then, was a son of John Wombwell and Honor King. He married Susan Dyer on 2nd November 1839
at Langley Parish Church.
At the 1851 Census Peter was listed as aged 33 and Susan aged 32. He was working as an
agricultural labourer and Peter, Susan and their three daughters were living at Upper Green in
I could not find them on the 1861 Census, so I assume they had emigrated - probably soon after
Charles and his family.
Susan died in 1865 in Victoria, Australia, while Peter lived on until his death in 1892, also in
All three daughters remained in Australia and married there. Mary Ann married Joseph Jones in
1861 and died in 1913, Maria married George Jones Crawley in 1863 and died in 1930, while
Elizabeth married James Crawley in 1867 and died in 1932. They all married in Victoria and died
there at Merino.
